Fort Santiago is a wall, a divider of the citadel, built for defense, and as a prison, of which our renowned Philippine hero Jose Rizal was kept locked up, this served as Jose's holding place before his execution.
Fort Santiago was first built with wood and mud, but when the Chinese Pirate Lin Feng tried at 1574 and succeeded in sieging the wall, the people decided to rebuilt it but this time out oh cold hard rock, as to not break again. They may have built it out of hard stone, but it will not stand by the end of the war...
The Building was first built at 1571, by Fuerte de Santiago, who is a Spanish, for the at the time a newly established city (Manila)
Fort Santiago was used as a prison camp by the Japanese in the Cold War. The Americans declared it a shrine of freedom in 1950, but was not yet restored till 1953, as it was before, Now it holds great importance in the hearts of the Filipino not only as a symbol of freedom, but also as a site of many, many historical events, and yet it still stands
How is it today?
Fort Santiago Right now is a tourist spot, to see the inside, the architecture, a tiny window to the past, you may find it in Fort Santiago, HXVC+M5V, Intramuros, Manila, 1002 Metro Manila, you may visit at 8 PM to 8 PM during weekdays, and 9 AM to 9PM during weekends.
