Introduction

Museo de Intramuros is one of the most historic sites in Manila. Filled with numerous collections such as relics, pictures, and religious items from the time of the Spanish colonial era. Museo De Intramuros is managed by the Intramuros Administration. It is built near San Ignacio Church ruins.

The History of Museo de Intramuros

After 40 years of hard work, Museo de Intramuros finally opened in May of 2019. The museum is composed of 2 buildings. First is the San Ignacio Church and second is the mission house. Museo de Intramuros is built on the site of the San Ignacio Church and the mission house which was damaged in the second world war. San Ignacio Church was owned by the Jesuit Order. They were one of the original Catholic missionaries sent to the Philippines in the 16th century. The first Jesuit compound in Intramuros was originally located at the block of present day Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. However because of political problems in Europe the Jesuit Order was expelled from the Spanish Colonies in 1768 and a century later they were finally back again in the Philippines in the year 1859. After realizing that their old compound is no longer theirs because it became a military barracks, they needed a new place to stay. The archbishop of Manila gave them his land for them to stay in. And the land given to them is the new church and compound they used in 1878. In 1889 the San Ignacio Church was completed and was considered as one of the most beautiful churches in Asia. It was designed by Felix Roxas following a classical and renaissance look. After its destruction in the Second World War it was bought by the City of Manila and was rented to private companies and finally even converted to a office space and a warehouse. After that the Intramuros Administration got the property and reconstructed the church and the mission house to become a museum that will show the different kinds of artifacts it collected.
