Intramuros is considered as a home to the old Spanish-era Landmarks such as Fort Santiago and a shrine dedicated to one of our greatest National Heroes Jose Rizal. Intramuros was not only filled with these great Landmarks, Museums and statues but also served as the seat of government of the Captaincy General of the Philippines.
The Japanese Occupation By Juanito Torres
During December 1941, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded the Philippines including their enemies bringing harm and chaos to the country. Some of the casualties that Intramuros faced were the destruction of the Santo Domingo Church and the original University of Santo Tomas campus during an Assault where the Japanese used the school as an Interment Camp for civilians, foreigners and POWs (Prisoners of War). In the Interment Camps they teach War crimes and vulgar acts on what they "should" do when they see or meet up with Americans and people living abroad.
After 4 years into occupancy the battle for the liberation of Manila began starting the Chaos that exterminated tons of lives. After fighting for days the American and Japanese Battalions were in Critical Conditions which forced the Japanese Army to fled and retreat back to the Intramuros District. After a long discussion between General MacArthur and his comrades they agreed on bombing Intramuros to take down the Japanese and so they bombarded the district which also affected cities and other places that were nearby and then the intense massacre started; 16,665 Japanese men were murdered including 100,000 innocent Filipino men, women, children and families that were thriving from the oppression. After 29 days of constant war and murder the Japanese lost their grip and lost to the US. At the end of World War II, Majority of the Buildings in Intramuros were Destroyed and blown apart by the bombs but only the San Agustin Church which is still standing up and is still being used up until today.
