Healthy Communication for Healthy Relationships
We will have many different types of relationships in our lives--platonic, romantic, sexual, familial and more. Effective communication skills are important for all relationships--not just romantic ones! It’s completely normal to have a hard time communicating effectively with the people we care about. Many people deal with misunderstandings, unspoken expectations, and the stress of balancing their own needs with those of others.
Having difficulty communicating is a natural part of our relationship journeys, and it’s okay if it takes time to feel comfortable expressing yourself. Working with your loved ones to learn how to communicate openly can be a good sign that you're building stronger connections with those around you! Below are some tips on how to foster healthy communication:
Open Communication
Open communication involves sharing thoughts, feelings, and concerns honestly without fear of judgment. It creates a safe space where all people feel seen and respected. Using open communication can help resolve or prevent conflict, and strengthen bonds.
Active Listening
Actively listening is a skill that involves fully focusing on your partner(s) or loved ones’ words, emotions, and needs. Some active listening skills include: thoughtful attention, eye contact, and responding with empathy.
Avoid Assuming
Assuming we know what our partner(s) or loved ones are thinking or feeling can lead to misunderstandings and create tension. Instead, asking open-ended questions and seeking clarification allows for productive and honest conversations.
Use "I" statements
Using "I statements" in communication helps express feelings and needs without blaming or criticizing the other person. For example, you could say "I feel hurt when..." instead of "You always...". This encourages more constructive conversations and reduces defensiveness.
Boundaries
Boundaries help define personal limits, ensuring that everyone feels valued and understood. Clearly communicating boundaries—whether emotional, physical, or mental—allows you to feel safe in your self and relationship. Maintaining boundaries requires revisiting and adjusting them as your needs evolve.
