ARTIST STATEMENT

Elyse Jung-Vrymoed is a Los Angeles based artist and teacher. She is a practitioner of the mantra “Yes, and…” Her 10 years working with young children influences her experimental attitude and hearty embrace of the ridiculous, though her subjects remain thoroughly adult. Interested in the ever-poignant human topics of sex, myth and mortality, her artwork playfully points at life’s big juicy questions.

What art classes did you take while at Crossroads? Leslie Rosdol was gracious enough to allow me to practically live in the ceramics studio. I cannot overstate how formative that level of supportive creative freedom was to me. Additionally, Vernon Salyers' playful approach to conversing with student's about their work heavily influenced the way I chat with my students today.

How did Crossroads help to shape or influence you as an artist? As a student, I felt like my teachers were genuinely curious about the projects I was passionate about. That made a tremendous difference; it gave me the permission to take myself more seriously as an artist.
