Background
For our third portfolio exhibit, we had to focus on color, using grids and layers. I always have liked surrealism and got this inspiration from many of my favorite artists like Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Pablo Picasso. Obviously, they are far more advanced, but this got me wanting to try more surrealism in future projects which will help me progress in this form of art.
Photoshop
I went into Photoshop
Stretched the picture out from the left and clicked content-aware to add more scenery.
Furthermore, I changed the beach ocean image to a more pink, purple, and red sunset vibe.
I enhanced the sunset and added more sun so it can stick out.
The way I was able to do the first two edits was after watching a YouTube video called "How to Create Realistic Sunset Effect in Photoshop - Turn Day Photo into Golden Evening" by PSDESIRE.
Afterward, I used the lasso tool to cut out the girl, whales, birds, and bubbles.
To create a silhouette look, I went into each blending option and added a black color overlay.
The silhouettes go against the background scenery. I made several layers and put them in order of priority.
I grouped the sunset edits together and the silhouettes together in a different group.
Finally, I added Acumin Variable Concept Thin text "Dream" in white and brought down the opacity to 80% to round out the whole look of a surreal poster.
Design
The design incorporated contrast, repetition, aligning elements, and proximity. I changed the background contrast to make it stand out more as well as added silhouettes that contrast against the background. I used repetition for the bubbles to create more bubbles. I aligned the elements using the rule of thirds where the focus isn't in the center, but to the right of the image. For proximity, I wanted the silhouettes to stay close together because it makes the image feel surreal. I also wanted the whale to be close enough to the little girl while giving enough space to make the image look open in proximity to where the girl is reaching out for the whale. The text I chose was Acumin Variable Concept Thin. I wanted the text to make it look like a poster you can hang in a place or environment of creativity.
