In this MOOC, I will discuss Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS) similarly to how Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has been discussed historically.
While PBIS and ABA are similar models based on the same universal design for behaviour change, they are fundamentally different in their approaches to achieving this change.
PBIS has a heavy focus on positive support, increasing students’ ability to reach goals and using positive praise and remediation to support student behaviour change. This stands in contrast to ABA, which uses both positive encouragement and negative punishment and has a history of questionable moral and ethical applications, especially within the domain of managing children who live with autism spectrum disorder.
While this MOOC does not engage in politics and will not take a political lens to behaviour change, I encourage you to consider the implications that behaviour change through the application of ABA can have.
