Data Cafés

A Participatory Approach to Sharing Data

with Spanish-Speaking Immigrant Communities

Inspired by the World Café methodology, Data Cafés is a participatory data sense-making activity primarily used with Spanish-speaking immigrants in four community partnerships across Los Angeles County. These community partnerships, which consist of 40 to 50 community members and diverse stakeholders, are located in East Los Angeles, Metro Los Angeles, Southeast Los Angeles, and South El Monte/El Monte. Data Cafés prioritize community assets, dialogue, collaborative data interpretation, and reflection. Community members, organizational leaders, and key stakeholders can use Data Cafés to inform their systems change efforts, to reflect on the magnitude of social issues affecting their communities, and to ultimately develop data-driven recommendations. The poster below outlines the benefits of involving community members in data interpretation, how to plan and facilitate Data Cafés, and discusses how this approach builds sustainability and data literacy.
