By this concept I am challenging the foundational belief of economists and other social science disciplines that human beings always act in their own self-interest because they are rational beings. Human beings may pride themselves as masters of the planet (an expression of what I call evolutionary hubris) because they have the most complex brain but that does not imply that they always think/behave logically or rationally, even when their own self-interest is at stake. In fact, I want to suggest that to act irrationally or illogically, at times, may be part of our genetic makeup as human beings (to ensure the survival of the species) because the evolution of all life is also a function of nothing more than serendipity.
