A virulent ideological expression of sexism characteristic of patriarchal societies that aims to reduce women to the status of the “Other” in order to justify their denigration, exploitation, physical abuse, violation of their human rights, etc., comprising a constellation of defamatory stereotypes, beliefs, values, and so on about women.
Misogyny, it must be noted, is not necessarily the preserve of only males; females may also be socialized to adopt misogynistic values and behavior in a classic case of self-hatred. (See also Essentialism, Other/Otherness, Patriarchy)
