While the kindergarteners have their own dedicated outdoor space, a huge area is also available to first through fifth graders during snack and lunch times, and for P.E.
Break times are supervised by Yard Aides, who have the added support of Teaching Parent (TP) volunteers.
Each TP has daily dedicated "zones" and yard responsibilities, based on their time slot and teacher.
Staggered break times between grades ensure children have plenty of space to play with their peers.
While the kindergarteners also have a garden, every other month, the first through fifth grade students receive a lesson at their private garden. Students grow, harvest, and sample their own fruits and vegetables.
The Learning Garden and composter provide valuable hands-on lessons in growth cycles, sustainability, and soil nutrition.
Snack and lunch times are supervised by Yard Aides and TP volunteers.
Multi-step allergy protocols are in place, including separated tables and hand cleaning routines both before and after break times.
Students have a wide variety of choices to move their bodies during snack and lunch periods. The courts include space to play dodge ball, basketball, tetherball, handball, and a gaga pit.
Students looking for a quiet retreat often head to the shady Grove, which also has an outdoor stage for pretend play and activities.
Students receive P.E. every week, usually at the courts and fields. Kindergarten receives P.E. once a week, while every other grade has P.E. twice a week.
The fields also host fun outdoor school-wide activities. This includes Run Club, where students meet up for supervised runs before and after school, and get prizes for logged miles.
