## Graphic Conventions
The templates follow generally accepted conventions in similar graphic representations:
- **Time** flows from **left to right** along the lines
- **Degree increases upward** and **decreases downward**
- **Positive = up**, **Negative = down**
## Template Definitions
### IT5L — Instant Temporary 5 Lines
Concepts which change without a significant noticeable transition period from one state
to another — with the potential to return to the original state.
### IT5LI — Instant Temporary 5 Lines INVERTED
Concepts which are generally considered negative from the norm and which change without
a significant noticeable transition period from one state to another — and which have
the potential to return to the original state.
### IP3LP — Instant Permanent 3 Lines Positive
The template for the concept for things which change from a negative state to a positive
state without a significant noticeable period of transition — but which have no potential
to return to the previous state.
### IP3LN — Instant Permanent 3 Lines Negative
The template for the concept for things which change from a positive state to a negative
state without a significant noticeable period of transition — but which have no potential
to return to the previous state.
### GT5L — Gradual Temporary 5 Lines
The template for concepts for which the significant noticeable transition period from one
state to another has a distinct beginning and an end — with the potential to return to
the original state.
### GT5LI — Gradual Temporary 5 Lines INVERTED
The template for concepts which are generally considered negative from the norm in which
the significant noticeable transition period from one state to another has a distinct
beginning and an end — with the potential to return to the original state.
### GP3LP — Gradual Permanent 3 Lines Positive
The template for concepts which change from a negative state to a positive state in which
the significant noticeable period of transition has a distinct beginning and an end —
but with no potential to return to the previous state.
### GP3LN — Gradual Permanent 3 Lines Negative
The template for concepts for things which change from a positive state to a negative
state in which the significant noticeable period of transition has a distinct beginning
and an end — but with no potential to return to the previous state.
### GTCV — Gradual Temporary Curve
The template for concepts in which the graduation from one state to another is continual
— with the potential to return to the original state.
### GTCVI — Gradual Temporary Curve INVERTED
The template for concepts which are generally considered negative from the norm in which
the graduation from one state to another is continuous — with the potential to return to
the original state.
### GPCVP — Gradual Permanent Curve Positive
The template for concepts which change from a negative state to a positive state in which
the graduation from one state to another is continuous — but with no potential to return
to the previous state.
### GPCVN — Gradual Permanent Curve Negative
The template for concepts which change from a positive state to a negative state in which
the graduation from one state to another is continuous — but with no potential to return
to the previous state.

## Single Line Templates
### Horizontal Line
The template to focus on displaying continuums in separation, distinct from the main
body of the template.
### Vertical Line
The template to focus on displaying extent or degree in separation, distinct from the
main body of the template.
### Diagonal Line Up
The template to focus on displaying the continuum and extent or degree of change toward
the positive in separation, distinct from the main body of the template.
### Diagonal Line Down
The template to focus on displaying the continuum and extent or degree of change toward
the negative in separation, distinct from the main body of the template.

## Proposed Additional Templates
*The following template types are proposed for development. They arise from concepts
whose shape cannot be adequately represented by any existing template.*
---
### ITGCV — Instant Temporary Gradual Curve *(proposed)*
The template for concepts which change from their normal state to a peak state without
a significant noticeable period of transition, and then return gradually to the original
state via a continuous curve — with the potential to return to the previous state.
**Shape:** Asymmetric curve — instant vertical spike to peak on the left;
gradual descending curve back to baseline on the right.
**Key distinction from existing templates:**
- From GTCV: the approach to peak is instant, not gradual
- From IT5L: the return to baseline is a gradual curve, not instant
- From GP3LN: the return to baseline does occur — the change is reversible
**Primary example:** Pain from sudden injury — instant onset at moment of injury;
gradual decrease as healing occurs; eventual return to pain-free baseline.
**Other candidates:** Acute allergic reaction; sudden loud noise fading;
power surge then gradual restoration; acute shock response.
---
### ITGCVI — Instant Temporary Gradual Curve Inverted *(proposed)*
The template for concepts which are generally considered negative from the norm,
which change from their normal positive state to a negative trough instantaneously,
and then return gradually to the original state via a continuous upward curve —
with the potential to return to the previous state.
**Shape:** Asymmetric inverted curve — instant vertical drop to trough on the left;
gradual ascending curve back to positive baseline on the right.
**Key distinction from existing templates:**
- From GTCVI: the descent to trough is instant, not gradual
- From IT5LI: the recovery to baseline is a gradual curve, not instant
**Primary example:** Sudden loss of confidence from public criticism — instant
drop at the moment of the event; gradual rebuilding over time.
**Other candidates:** Sudden bereavement; instant power cut then gradual
restoration; acute sudden fright then gradual calming.
---
### GTICV — Gradual Temporary Instant-return Curve *(proposed)*
The template for concepts which change gradually from their normal state to a peak,
and then return instantly to the original state — with the potential to return to
the previous state.
**Shape:** Asymmetric curve — gradual ascending curve to peak on the left;
instant vertical crash back to baseline on the right.
**Key distinction from existing templates:**
- From GTCV: the return from peak is instant, not gradual
- From IT5L: the approach to peak is a gradual curve, not instant
- Mirror image of ITGCV
**Primary example:** An economic bubble — value builds gradually over time then
crashes instantly; a wave building gradually then breaking suddenly.
**Other candidates:** Confidence built over time then suddenly shattered;
a reputation built gradually then instantly destroyed; a dam holding back
increasing pressure that suddenly bursts.
---
### GTICVI — Gradual Temporary Instant-return Curve Inverted *(proposed)*
The template for concepts which are generally considered negative from the norm,
which change gradually from their normal positive state toward a negative trough,
then return instantly to the original state — with the potential to return to
the previous state.
**Shape:** Asymmetric inverted curve — gradual descending curve to trough on the left;
instant vertical recovery back to positive baseline on the right.
**Key distinction from existing templates:**
- From GTCVI: the recovery from trough is instant, not gradual
- Mirror image of ITGCVI
**Primary example:** A gradual worsening of a situation that is then
suddenly resolved; a power outage that develops gradually then power
is instantly restored by a switch.
