LGBTQ+ Figures through History Project

While October may be LGBT History Month, knowing our community's history is important every month!

The members of Club Spectrum are excited to bring you the stories of those who have forged the path so that a student organization such as this could become a reality. Learn about important and impactful members of the LGBTQ+ community through narratives, artwork, essays, and reports.

Like history itself, the Club Spectrum LGBTQ+ Figures through History Project is an ongoing and ever-growing endeavor. If you would like to contribute, contact club advisor Laura Gonzalez.

LGBTQ History Month. Sally Ride, 1951-2012. Sally Ride was the first American woman astronaut to fly in space in 1984. She Flew on two shuttle missions, spending 12 days in space. She had degrees in physics and English, and a Ph.D. in astrophysics. She created opportunities for girls in science such as science camps, mentor programs, and festivals. She also taught at UCSD from 1989 until her death at 61 years old. In a lengthy NY Times article published after her death, the only mention of her sexuality is the line "Dr. Ride is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy."
