Tyler Clementi was a New Jersey native and student at Rutgers University who committed suicide after a cyberbullying incident. After being secretly recorded by his college roommate during an intimate encounter, Tyler ended his own life in response to the public ridicule perpetrated by his peers. His death along with a rash of other LGBT youth suicides were widely publicized and brought national attention to the seriousness of harassment and bullying aimed at LGBTQ youths.
Tyler's suicide in 2010 was the main catalyst for then high school student Brittany McMillan to initiate a movement, which we now recognize as Spirit Day—a day to bring awareness to stories like Tyler's and to promote acceptance, understanding, and love for victims of bullying, particularly that of youth LGBTQ+ students.
