Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California, serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (January 8, 1978 – November 27, 1978).
Along with S.F. Mayor George Moscone, Milk was assassinated by fellow city supervisor Dan White after an 11-1 vote which would ban discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment on the basis of sexual orientation.
Harvey Milk was seen as a martyr for LGBT activists and is celebrated around the country for the great work he did to normalize the gay community in the larger American culture.
