Sally Ride was the first American woman astronaut to fly in space in 1984. She Flew on two shuttle missions, spending 12 days in space. She had degrees in physics and English, and a Ph.D. in astrophysics. She created opportunities for girls in science such as science camps, mentor programs, and festivals. She also taught at UCSD from 1989 until her death at 61 years old. In a lengthy NY Times article published after her death, the only mention of her sexuality is the line "Dr. Ride is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy."
