We Are an Electrão School
Our school is proud to be part of the Escola Electrão program. This means we collect used electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, and light bulbs so they can be properly recycled. By doing this, we help protect the environment, reduce pollution, and move towards a zero waste future.
Students, teachers, and families all work together to bring old electronics from home. We learn how to recycle safely and why it’s important to give waste a new life, promoting more sustainable and responsible habits.
Cultivating Sustainability: The School Garden
With each seed planted, knowledge, responsibility, and a deep connection to the environment grow.
Harvesting potatoes, caring for crops, and understanding the cycle of life are experiences that make learning even more meaningful and fun! Our garden is also a space to explore biodiversity, where students observe different plants, insects, and ecosystems working together in harmony. Together, we are growing a greener future!
Toothbrush Recycling Project- Ecoescovão
The aim of this campaign is to promote oral health and sustainability, which is the focus of this year’s project at the Palmela School Group. By collecting and properly recycling used toothbrushes, students are learning about Zero Waste and how small actions can make a big difference for the planet.
Cycling to School Initiative:
“CicloExpresso”
The project at Escola Básica Matos Fortuna supports the Zero Waste movement by promoting cycling instead of car use. This helps reduce pollution, carbon emissions, and waste linked to motor vehicles. By lowering air and noise pollution, it also protects local biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Additionally, the project encourages healthier habits and a more sustainable lifestyle, aligning with Zero Waste values of reducing impact and making conscious choices in everyday life.
Work on Agricultural Pollution
As part of our environmental education activities, students created a poster about agricultural pollution. The goal was to raise awareness of how farming practices can affect nature, especially through the use of chemicals and poor waste management. The project also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming and the need to move towards a zero waste approach in agriculture.
Our School Canteen is Zero Waste
At our school, we are proud to say that our canteen follows a Zero Waste policy. We work together to reduce food waste by planning healthy and balanced meals, serving the right portions, and encouraging students to only take what they will eat. Leftovers are reused whenever possible, and food scraps are composted. We also avoid single-use plastics and use reusable containers and cutlery. By making these small changes, we are helping the planet and learning to be more responsible citizens.
The school attended Sustainable School in May,2024.
