Mrs. Compost Goes to School
At our school, environmental education comes to life through activities that promote sustainable development and environmental care. A recent example is our students’ initiative to create compost using a homemade compost bin.
The project began with an informative session for the fourth-grade students, led by teachers Mr. Panagiotis Triantafyllou and Ms. Christina Tziafa, about the composting process and its benefits. Students learned that composting is a natural way to recycle organic waste, transforming it into valuable fertilizer for plants. They also understood the importance of waste reduction and their role in preserving the environment.
To ensure the success of this initiative, the entire school community was informed about the importance of composting and encouraged to participate actively by bringing suitable organic materials from home.
Students took an active role in the project by collecting organic waste such as fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and leftovers from home and bringing them to school. These materials were placed in the homemade compost bin, which was constructed from natural materials (wooden pallets) and installed in an adopted space. The students monitor the process and take care of the bin, ensuring that the compost develops correctly.
Through this activity, students not only gain practical skills but also develop environmental awareness. The compost they produce will be used to nurture the plants in our school garden, which is gradually taking shape, completing the cycle of natural recycling.
This initiative is a small yet significant step toward a more sustainable future and a brilliant example of how small actions can have a big impact.
The activities are part of the broader framework of environmental education, the Erasmus+ 2023-2-EL01-KA210-SCH-000176111 "Climate is the Future", and our school’s participation in the International Thematic Network "Eco-Schools" and the Local Thematic Network "Learning in Nature: Gardens and Forests."
A heartfelt thank you to the parent of our student, Mr. Giannis Aggelakis, for providing the space for the compost bin, to DONTOS – To Monastiraki for donating fencing materials for our school garden, and to Flowers & Plants Ioannis Aggelakis for sponsoring the plants.
Autumn Corner of Local Products!
The aim of the exhibition is to cultivate cultural awareness among children by learning about and getting to know the local products of our area. The activity was carried out by the second-grade students with the help of their teachers, Ms. Evangelia Tsianoula and Ms. Athina Kantziou. The students present and process the products while focusing on their benefits, as they enhance our health and protect the environment. We sincerely thank the parents for their collaboration and prompt response.
Together for a Clean Planet
As part of our environmental responsibility and sustainable development efforts, Agnantero Primary School, guided and supported by teachers and parents, is launching a series of initiatives to promote ecology and sustainability within and outside the school community. From recycling and composting to creating a school garden, the school aims to enhance students' awareness of environmental challenges and encourage them to take action for a more sustainable future.
Students actively participate in various activities, such as creating ecological gardens, implementing recycling programs, and cultivating healthy, organic foods. These actions fall within the broader framework of environmental education, the implementation of the Erasmus+ program 2023-2-EL01-KA210-SCH-000176111 “Climate is the future,” and the school's participation in the International Thematic Network “Eco-Schools” and the Local Thematic Network “Learning in Nature: Gardens and Forests,” aiming to create children who are responsible for the environment and understand the connection between their daily choices and the protection of the planet.
Some of the main actions include:
● Composting: Fourth-grade students are implementing a composting program in a specially designed space coordinated by a parent and the class teachers, where organic waste from the school and home is transformed into natural fertilizer for the garden, thus reducing waste volume and contributing to a closed ecological cycle. The care of the compost is directly handled by the students.
● Recycling Programs: Creation of special recycling stations in visible areas of the school and educating students on proper waste management. Students actively participate in the recycling process and learn how to manage their materials with environmental consciousness.
● Promotion of Healthy Eating: Interactive lessons and events focusing on the value of fresh and organic foods and healthy eating habits are organized. Fruit salad and fresh vegetables from home have become a regular and beloved dietary habit among students each week.
● School Garden: Creation and care of a school garden where students learn about agriculture, recycling, and sustainable food production. The garden is fully organic and provides fresh produce for the school's needs.
This initiative is part of a larger effort by the school to incorporate environmental education into daily school life and promote the values of sustainability among students. The school's goal is to shape a new generation of children who understand and promote sustainable development.
For our school, ecological awareness is not just an educational activity but a way of life. This initiative is fully supported by the school community, which includes students, teachers, and parents, who work together to achieve sustainability and environmental protection goals.
Our school invites all parents and the local community to participate and support these initiatives, creating a network of mutual support and collaboration for the good of the environment.
