World Environment Day Celebration at Agnantero Primary School
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations on June 5, 2024, and our environmental activities under the Erasmus+ program “Climate is the Future,” our students received a presentation on recycling by Mr. Dimitrios Giannopoulos, head of P.A.DY.TH. (Environmental Development of Western Thessaly S.A.).
The students were informed about the work of P.A.DY.TH. and the operation of the “Integrated Waste Management System of the Western Thessaly Management Unit,” which includes:
● Recycling
● Transfer Stations
● Landfills (ΧΥΤΑ)
They learned key recycling principles:
● How to sort waste properly.
● What to throw into the blue recycling bins and what to avoid.
● Managing household waste through composting.
● Recycling batteries and electronic devices.
Informational brochures were distributed, and students committed to sharing the importance of recycling with their families. They were also offered juices, the paper packaging of which was recycled in the collection bins provided by the school.
Cross-Border Environmental Exchange
Additionally, the third and fourth-grade students of our school, along with their English teacher, Ms. Athina Kazana, participated in an online meeting with the fourth-grade students of the partner school Eser İlkokulu in Sakarya, Turkey, led by Ms. Kadriye Kepenek. The students exchanged greetings for World Environment Day and shared their activities and crafts related to the environment.
Bird Feeders
The winter landscape in our schoolyard and the cold weather raised awareness among the sixth-grade students about the protection of birds. They constructed bird feeders from cardboard boxes and edible materials, which they hung in the trees of the schoolyard.
The Tree of the Earth and the Kallikantzaroi
The Kallikantzaroi are part of Greek folklore (with ancient origins). They are demons who, according to modern tradition, appear during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25 – January 6). They emerge from the depths of the earth and spend the entire year chopping at the tree that holds the earth up, aiming to disrupt the harmony of the world and bring chaos. However, as they rise to the surface, the tree regenerates. These beings symbolize darkness and are enemies of the Unconquered Sun.
As part of the Erasmus+ program "Climate is the Future" (2023-2-EL01-KA210-SCH-000176111), our school used the folklore of the Kallikantzaroi to create stories linked to climate change and its effects, such as desertification, wildfires, and air pollution.
Visit to Vatsounia as Part of Erasmus+ "Climate is the Future"
On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the students of our school visited Vatsounia as part of the environmental activities under the Erasmus+ program “Climate is the Future.”
The fifth and sixth-grade students visited the facilities of the “THEONI” water bottling plant, where they observed the water production processes with great interest. They were informed about the safety regulations followed in a water bottling factory and the environmentally friendly practices implemented to minimize the environmental footprint, including the innovative paper packaging used by THEONI.
Finally, everyone explored the agritourism facility “KERAMARIO.” We observed the area's flora and fauna, listened to the sounds of birds, and enjoyed a picnic in nature.
The smiles on the children's faces were the best assurance for organizing similar excursions in the future! 😊
