Lesson 3
Describing the Human Damage on Divergent Ecosystems
Describing the Human Damage on Divergent Ecosystems
Science Journal (5-10 minutes)
Share with your classmates the experiment drawings and write a positive comment about their work
Class Activity: Ocean Pollution (30-40 minutes)
Complete a class survey on ocean pollution
Have you met a Deaf scientist before? If so, explain who it was and what this person does? If not, who would you like to meet? (You can write about this in your science journal)
Click on the video below to watch Jennifer Reilly share about her experience as a Deaf sea turtle biologist and ocean conservationist at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Florida. She also shares about what she does in her work and concerns on ocean pollution and sea turtles
Introduction to Research Project - Micro (30-40 minutes)
We will be focusing on micro-environment (i.e. trash pollution, deforestation) for this project. You will be given a topic to research and create PowerPoint presentation to share with your class
Review the Research Project - Micro Guidelines (can be found in the Assessment tab) to learn about what you will have to include in your presentation
View the ASL video and presentation to learn what the Research Project - Micro presentation will look like
After completing the ASL video, go ahead and work on the first part of your research project. You are to research and describe the human activity and what causes it. Start creating your PowerPoint slides and add sources and pictures to them
Research Project - Micro: Check In (20-30 minutes)
Share your thoughts about your project and what you have found or learned with your family members and friends. Discuss these questions: "How do you think your theme impact our planet? Our ecosystem? What causes it?" with them
For your research project, you are to answer the question: “How does it impact our planet? Our divergent ecosystem?” through your research and create PowerPoint slides today. Research on possible effect(s) on our planet and ecosystem from your theme
Don't forget to add sources of where you find the information to the last slide of PowerPoint Presentation
After completing this part, you may move on to the next part below
Science Journal (5-10 minutes)
Write about the question, “What are different ways you can collect data?” in your science journal
Mini Lesson: Data Collection (15-25 minutes)
We will learn how to collect data, create survey interview questions to draw out information about the damage from random people. What is data collection? What is data? Why should we collect data?
You will be given a Methods of Data Collection Notes worksheet. Use this worksheet to take notes while watching the ASL video and looking at the PowerPoint slides (can be found under the Tips for Research tab)
After completing the video and PowerPoint slides, use your notes to review the six methods of data collection with your classmates
Mini Lesson: Survey Interview Questions (30-45 minutes)
You and your group members will be doing surveys and interviews as your methods of data collection for research projects
Watch the video (ASL Version) and look at the PowerPoint slides
After completing the video and PowerPoint slides, you will be given Survey Interview Questions Guidelines. Find your group members for your Research Project - Micro and go through the guidelines together
Watch the Excel Tutorial in the Tips for Research tab to help you complete Steps Five and Six in the guidelines. On Excel, you are to fill in your data and create 2-D pie charts which you can use for your PowerPoint presentation
