What is it?
This website is an online platform for middle school science curriculum on climate change. It consists of assessments (i.e. science journals, research projects, pre & post test) that will track students' progress, tips for research (i.e. data collection, survey interview questions) that will provide students research skills, Unit 1 that will have students gather information about how humans harm the Earth and Unit 2 that will have students learn how our consequences harm humans, animals and our planet. The lessons include ASL videos, photos, practice worksheets, guidelines, and PowerPoint slides to enhance students' STEM learning experience. This online platform also provides 30 STEM vocabulary words in ASL and additional resources for further learning on climate change.
Who is it for?
The science material on this website is meant for middle school aged children who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who use ASL as their primary language.
Who created this curriculum?
This curriculum was created by Jennifer Wickman, a Master's student studying Teaching & Learning: Bilingual Education (ASL/English) at the University of California, San Diego. Wickman was inspired to design the curriculum due to lack of access to science content in both ASL and English. The curriculum was designed to be implemented in a D/HH middle school setting and was modified for students to receive access to science in ASL at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
