Lesson 1
Identifying the Signs of Climate Change
Identifying the Signs of Climate Change
Prior to starting the curriculum unit, you will have completed videotaping yourself for the Pre Test. It is a way for your teacher to see what you know about the topic of climate change.
Gallery Walk Activity (15-20 minutes)
Have you experienced going to a museum? Have you seen pictures on the wall? Why do you think they are there? Think about these questions and discuss with your family members and friends what your thoughts are
Click on the ASL video of gallery walk below and watch the video
Next, you will see an image carousel of gallery walk pictures below that represent an overview of climate change
Take 2 minutes per picture and write down your emotions, thoughts and/or knowledge about the topic in your science journal
Below you will see an ASL video of gallery walk and an image carousel of gallery walk pictures
Gallery Walk Discussion (20-30 minutes)
After completing the gallery walk, share your feelings/thoughts about the gallery walk. You can also show them the pictures to further discuss about the climate change
Use the questions and sentence frames below to help guide your discussion and thoughts. Click on the ASL video of discussion questions and sentence frames below
Use these questions to help guide your discussions:

2) How did that make you feel seeing them?
3) What do you know about these issues within climate change?
Use these sentence frames to help guide your thoughts:
1) I notice...
2) I feel...
3) I know...

Identifying Signs of Climate Change (20-30 minutes)
Have you noticed recent changes in the weather or unusual weather patterns where you live? If so, describe them. How do we damage our Earth? What does damage mean?
Click on the Micro-Environment and Macro-Environment buttons below to learn what they are
Next, click on the 6 buttons (micro: trash, deforestation; macro: melting cap, bushfires, global warming; solution: protest) below to learn more about them
Science Journal (5-10 minutes)
Answer this question by writing your thoughts in your science journal: "Are humans responsible for this? If so, how and what can we do about it?"
Click on the ASL video below and watch the video
Use these sentence frames to help guide your thoughts:
1) I think that humans are/are not responsible for this because...
2) We can...
3) I wonder...
Introduction to Climate Change Project (10 minutes)
We will be exploring this hot topic of Climate Change, why should we care, what does it have to do with me and why do we need to take action. My hope is to empower you all to think critically and analyze the damage that has been made to this planet as a result of our action and explain the choices we make that affect the immediate and larger environment and how we can stand up for the preservation of our planet (see below for the ASL video)
You will do a Climate Change Project where you will be given a climate change topic, research and share your findings with your peers and teacher through a 5-7 minutes presentation
Check out the Climate Change Project guidelines and be sure to look at the presentation rubric
Teacher Model Climate Change Project (10-20 minutes)
View the ASL video and presentation to learn what the Climate Change Project presentation will look like
Climate Change Project Discussion (15-30 minutes)
After completing the Climate Change Project, share your knowledge about the topic with your family members and friends. Click on the ASL video of discussion questions and sentence frames below
Use these questions to help guide your discussions:
1) What do you know about the (theme)?
2) What do you wonder about the (theme)?
