Connect Care AI Tools
The Connect Care AI Tools currently being trialed will review the patient’s chart and compose a summary.
Type of AI and Uses
Generative AI
Three tools that use generative AI have undergone pilot testing among Connect Care volunteers, one for outpatient and two for inpatient:
"Outpatient Insights"
Creates a summary of recent medical developments for patients. The automated summary is generated 36 hours before a patient’s appointment so that it can reviewed in advance of an outpatient visit."Inpatient Insights"
Combs through notes from the patient’s current hospital encounter and other data to produce a summary that can help clinicians get to know patients at clinical handovers."Draft Hospital Course"
Pulls together relevant information for a patient's hospital course. The generated summary can be used as a starting point in creating a hospital course section of a discharge summary.
The Inpatient Insights and Draft Hospital Course tools received positive feedback from prescribers, earning praise for improving clinical efficiency. Both will be broadly available to Connect Care prescribers. A staged roll-out will onboard prescribers in three waves; beginning in October, January and February 2026.
Predictive AI
A clinician-facing predicted discharge disposition tool is available to assist with inpatient discharge planning. This uses a machine learning AI model to anticipate the type of living arrangement, and level of support, a patient is most likely to need at discharge from hospital.
Who Has Access
Some tools (e.g., Draft Hospital Course) may be restricted to prescribers who have met access requirements (see below). Others (e.g., Predicted Discharge Disposition) are generally available while undergoing evaluation to determine the best way to support prediction users in Connect Care workflows.
Staged Implementation
Generative AI documentation tools (Inpatient Insights and Draft Hospital Course) are deployed to Connect Care prescribers in waves, starting October 19, 2026. Specialty groups are contacted in advance of each wave. They are provided with information about the anticipated tool release and requirements for access.
Access Requirements
Prescribers seeking access to Connect Care-embedded Generative AI tools must demonstrate basic awareness of safe, effective and appropriate uses of AI. A Connect Care "AI Driver's License Training" module can be completed online. This, plus a pre-implementation survey, is required before the Patient Insights or Draft Hospital Course tools can be activated. Links to both are provided within the invitation letter sent to prescribers.
Once training is satisfactorily completed, the invited prescriber's name is added to a queue for Information Technologies (IT) to provision access. The prescriber will be contacted via email when provision is active. Note that this process may take time, depending upon queue lengths.
