LAST UPDATED NOVEMBER 24, 2022. Content will evolve as Connect Care is launched across the province, and as optimizations are made to the system. Please also note that the delivery information on these pages applies to mixed-context practitioners only, and in the majority of circumstances, but some exceptions may not be reflected here.
Delivery of Laboratory Results, Diagnostic Imaging, ECG & Endoscopy Reports
Mixed-context practitioners can receive results and reports in their Epic In Basket, in another Alberta Health Services (AHS) clinical information system (CIS) (until Connect Care is fully implemented), in an electronic medical record (EMR) that they use outside of AHS in a community or private practice, or via mail, courier or fax. The location in which they receive the results and reports depends on where and how the clinical test or intervention is ordered. The examples below review several common ordering contexts and the associated delivery pathways.
Connect Care sends courtesy copies (cc: copies) of results based on the practitioner’s default eDelivery location and their Connect Care communication preference. Mixed-context practitioners will usually receive copies of results in their In Baskets. If they have eDelivery, they will also receive the copied result in their default EMR. They will no longer receive cc: copies via fax or mail. Practitioners can copy themselves to get results to the EMR at their default eDelivery location.
Results for tests ordered in a Connect Care inpatient setting
Inpatient results and reports will be available for review within Connect Care and reviewed through the “Chart Review” function in Epic. In some cases, results may also be delivered to the practitioner’s Connect Care In Basket.
If a mixed-context practitioner is copied on a test ordered in this context, it will be received in their In Basket as well as in their default EMR, if they have eDelivery.
Results for tests ordered in an outpatient setting where AHS is responsible for the record of care
Outpatient results and reports will be delivered to the practitioner’s Connect Care In Basket for review within Epic.
If a mixed-context practitioner is copied on a test ordered in this context, it will be received in their In Basket as well as in their default EMR, if they have eDelivery. See “Results delivery when a mixed-context practitioner is copied on a test ordered or resulted in Connect Care” below.
The table below outlines some specific routing examples for this context.
Results for tests ordered in a community setting where the practitioner is responsible for the record of care (tests ordered in your own clinic)
Community results will be sent by eDelivery to the EMR, or by other methods such as fax, mail, or within the Connect Care CIS.
If a mixed-context practitioner is copied on a test ordered in this context, it will be received in their In Basket as well as in their default EMR if they have eDelivery.
The table below outlines some specific routing examples for this context.

This information was last updated November 24, 2022.
The information provided in this subsection of the Manual is specific to practitioners who work at AHS sites using Connect Care/Epic as the AHS Legal Record of Care, and who also work in a clinic or clinics with a private record of care.
Until Connect Care is fully implemented within AHS, the information and tables in this subsection of the Manual refer to results or reports that are routed through the Connect Care clinical information system, Epic. The information in this document does not suggest that other systems will manage information the same way. Some legacy systems still in use, like eScription, may continue to route information directly to private clinics in some areas, until all parts of the province are using Connect Care.
Technical limitations exist within Epic such that some messages generated within Connect Care for tests or interventions ordered outside of Connect Care (e.g., at a community clinic) will only be delivered to the practitioner’s Epic In Basket, if an In Basket exists for that practitioner. There is no technical option to deliver the results to another EMR or via fax/mail.
