conversations

What does 'conversations with the inmates' mean?

It means to enter jail and spend some time with the prisoner. Moreover, you are allowed to bring some useful goods, i.e. clothes, and to deposit some money on the prisoner’s internal current account, through the kiosk computer. (Read below what you can and you cannot bring)

The authorization for conversations is usually released to close relatives and to people for whom the prisoner has expressed a specific request to the competent authority to enter as ‘third person’.

Only six entries in a month are allowed.

What should you do?

First of all, you need to request for an authorization

Without an authorization you will not be allowed an entry .

Who releases it?

  • If the person in prison is waiting to be taken to trial and a condemnation has not been sentenced, the authorization is released by the judge of the trial. It is convenient that you ask the lawyer!
  • If the person has already received his condemnation in the first instance trial, the authorization is issued by the Director (even when the person is trying either in front of the Court of Appeal or in front of the Corte di Cassazione, i.e. the Italian High Court). It is enough that you turn up at the Ufficio Colloqui , i.e. Conversation Office, bringing a document which shows that you are a relative or a family member. If you have the Italian citizenship, you will have to fill a self-certification form which you will be given as soon as you reach the office. You do not need to do any other request!
  • If a prisoner, who has already been receiving visits, gets another warrant with an investigation against him, you have to start over: if you have already been entering for conversations, you have to ask the judge to issue another authorization to enter.

Second, you reserve the conversation

As the space is limited, it is essential to take a reservation in order to avoid logistical inconvenience.

The office where you can take a reservation will be open between

  • Monday - from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Tuesday and Thursday - from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday and Friday - from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • Saturday - from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

In these working hours, you can call the number 0331 680064, but there stands a risk of phones not being attended. If you want to be sure to get a reservation, you have to go to prison and reserve directly in person.

Which day can you have a conversation?

Monday and Thursday, the admission is possible at 12.15 pm, 1.20 pm, 2.30 pm, and 3.40 pm.

Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and the last Sunday of every month, the entry is allowed at 8.05 am, 9.10 am, 10.20 am, and 11.30 am.

All this means that when you set up a conversation, you have to define at what time (i.e. at which shift) you will enter, considering your wishes as well as the availability of space.
