Cardboard Box Animation
2020 ⬤ "A hop through the caverns"
Summary
This is a short animation of a sentient cardboard box in a dimly-lit cardboard cavern, innocently hopping along from shadow to shadow until it hops beneath the camera and we lose sight of it.
Overview
This animation was made to practice using shape keys on the cardboard box character, as well as to practice camera animation. The character, inspired by the appearance of the cardboard box hat in the Sonic Adventure games' Chao Gardens with holes carved to see through, hops along through a stretch of warmly-lit cardboard-panelled cavern flapping its open box "wings" to hop, which were shape-keyed in different positions to alter the degree of flapping. The end of the animation features a 180-degree frantic camera spin as the box hops under the camera, only to lose sight of the character in the darkness. This handheld-esque effect was achieved with springy interpolation.

"Must feel crunchy to walk on cardboard. Especially at the edges."
