LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Technical communicators are also leaders in their field. Although our work is largely collaborative, it's up to us to take charge of communication projects to ensure they're the best they can be.
When it comes to leadership, I lean towards being a servant leader. While in the military I learned that if I’m to build trust with my team, I should know and serve their interests. My goals as a leader are to see those around me succeed so that they, in turn, help others to do the same.
I believe leadership is also a role that should follow a democratic style. Each team member is encouraged to openly give their opinions and ideas for consideration and disposition as a team.
Through a screen grab of a "Stand-Up" sessions I held as a team leader (below), you can see where I celebrate past successes, discuss next actions, assign responsibilities, and set deadlines.
