The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.Â
These photos show a classroom with flexible seating, including a photo of my desk as a pre-student teacher. This allows for active engagement and student ability to choose their seats to promote the positive social interaction in the down times of the classroom. The ability for the students to choose their seats shows a mutual respect of the students respecting the classroom rules and the teacher respecting the seating choice. My desk also has a board behind it which allows for "shout outs" to promote the social recognition of students for doing good deeds.
This slide show helped me create a start to positive relationships with the students through giving them some information about myself. I allowed the students to ask questions about what they wanted to know about me and I asked them to follow this discussion by filling out a survey, so that I could get to know some of their favorites to get to know them a little quicker than just through interactions. This also supports the building of mutual respect because I care about getting to know each student, which means they will care about getting to know me.
