The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.Â
This artifact relates to working with the speech language pathologist to translate into Arabic for the mother in order to help understand what is happening with the student during class. This helps with fostering social and emotional development through a collaborative relationship among the school and family members. This helped with the linguistic differences, as the student wasn't concerned when it was being sent home in English because he could tell his own story of what happened. This applies to this student in particular as they have a behavior intervention plan on their IEP, which helps their academic experiences.
These photographs help show how important developing relationships with my students is to me through my teaching. Through developing these relationships with students, I have been able to help many diverse students by just asking them little questions about themselves and letting them know little pieces of my life. These photographs show my last day student teaching and how much I had impacted their lives, which I didn't even realize the extent until I received all these cards. In those cards, some students who I had helped only a few times wrote very heartfelt notes about the impact I had on them. This exact example is the reason why I believe strong teacher-student relationships, especially those among diverse students, will create the strongest and most impactful learning environment.
