Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, "Pumpkin" (Tim Roth) and "Honey Bunny" (Amanda Plummer).
When starting to watch the movie I was under the impression that this would turn out like the godfather and I wouldn't understand and would end up hating it. Tarintino's style is hard to understand when first watching his movies. As I kept watching Pulp Fiction I started to get into it. I started to understand his style and can see why it is unique in Hollywood.
The movie can be separated into 3 stories or parts. Before the beginning credits, I was very confused about what was happening. Then they cut to Jules and Vincent in the car talking. Their conversation was very interesting. They are basically criticizing what is wrong with America and how other countries like France did things. As they go into the apartment building the conversation shifts to their boss's wife and what happened to the last guy that watched over her. Mia and Vincent have great chemistry and I kind of wanted something to happen. I also didn't expect the movie to have a comedy aspect to it. In my opinion, the climax was almost a comedy when everyone was freaking out. Then the disgruntled state of Mia and Vincent at the end of their story really shows how they went through hell and back.
The second story is about Butch and how he double-crossed Marcellus and the fallout of what happened. Some of the scenes in this story grossed me out. I don't want to go into too much detail because it would ruin the plot of Butch's story. They also cover heavy topics that I don't want to discuss on a blog. I was happy at the end when Butch and his girlfriend got away.
The third and final storyline follows Vincent and Jules again but with a focus on Jules. After they went to the apartment complex Jules thinks that they had just survived a divine intervention and believes he is done with his job and wants to retire. From the apartment, they take one of the lackeys to give to Marcellus but Vincent blows off his head and they have to call the wolf to help them clean up the mess they made. They end up at the dinner that gets robbed at the beginning of the movie and everything kinda started to click into place for me. Jules stops the robbing and then the movie just ends.
The ending of the movie was pretty unsatisfying. We don't get to see any more of what happens to the characters after their story ends. I was pleasantly surprised that I did enjoy the film though. The only reason I can see that it is a classic is because of Tarantino's style of film, not the plot. The plot was alright and very funny but not award-winning. My favorite part had to be how the characters crossed over in stories and how they were all interconnected.
