The Brita House
The Brita House was built around 1920. Brita lived in the house the longest—first with her mother, and later alone. She was a wonderful woman, the village nurse, and well liked by everyone. She lost her sweetheart in the sinking of the coastal steamer Sankt Svithun near Stadt in 1943. There was never anyone else that could replace him.
Toward the end of her life, Brita built herself a new house in the residential area at Stuvik. Relatives took over the old house and used it as a holiday home until 2018. That year, we were given the opportunity to take over the house from Olav and Eivind, since it lies almost within our own garden.
First we too care of the small breakwater that was almost collapsing and built the quay.
The next year and a half was spent working intensely to restore it. On the outside, we got help from master builders Finnshus and Selvåg. The work was carried out with expert advice from the county, custom-ordered planed cladding, traditional windows and several coats of linseed oil paint. We trimmed the overgrown hedges and laid cobblestones—with great help from our friend Jostein Myge.
Inside, we did all the work ourselves, with only a plumber and an electrician assisting. Now, we’re grateful for the positive feedback from neighbors and visitors: Brita House has become a cozy home, both inside and out.
