Sawa Le Baad, which translates to Together for Each Other, is an overarching platform designed to create a fairer and more just South Sudan, where families are healthier and prosper more because women can take part in making decisions about the health and happiness of themselves and their families.
Developed through a series of co-design workshops, participants were asked “how might we nudge South Sudanese men and women to make better health choices by promoting a more gender-equal vision for South Sudanese households and communities.” The concept provides a culturally appropriate framework to achieve gender equity, balance inequitable power dynamics, and sustain healthy behaviors. It reflects the importance and meaning of providing a level playing field - the idea of “justice and fairness” especially in regard to gender equity and power relations between men and women, health providers and clients, and community leaders and members.
Social and Behavior Change Objectives
Provide accurate information to women and couples on family planning, maternal, newborn, and child health, and WASH.
Provoke dialogue and empathy for women and family members, especially around GBV, and early marriage.
Promote shared decision-making on household and family health and support for women’s decisions on their health.
Empower women and couples to choose modern health practices that respect culture and tradition.
Promote trust in health providers.
Sawa Le Baad brings together the different approaches and materials developed by Breakthrough ACTION, offering a package of tools for behavior change. The platform and package can be used as is and build upon, or as a launchpad for addressing other health topics.
Provided within the Sawa Le Baad package is the brand architecture that outlines the brand purpose and positioning. This can be used to further guide future design to ensure that new approaches and tools fit within the overarching concept and maintain the central themes of providing accurate information, provoking dialogue, facilitating shared decision-making, increasing trust, and addressing harmful gender norms.
New approaches and tools should be designed keeping the guiding principles in mind, using a co-design process, and placing individuals at the center of all you do.
“Together for each other” is a call for unity and empathy for one another.
Together we are stronger.
Together we are healthier.
Together we can prosper.
Together as men and women, fathers and mothers.
Together as one country. Together as one community.
Together for each other starts in the home: men and women making decisions together, listening to each other and supporting one another, setting goals together.
Together for each other is how we build strong communities, with healthy, families, with mothers and wives empowered to make decisions, help decide the future of their families and their health.
