Child spacing planning card
Adapted from a game designed in Uganda by ideas42 and IntraHealth, “Together We Decide” is a game designed using behavioral design that creates a safe space for participants to learn and discuss how to build health and harmony within their families. The game is designed to increase male engagement in the family planning process and allows players to experience the outcome of choices about child spacing, to build familiarity with child spacing methods, and to gain comfort discussing these topics with their partners, family, and health workers. The game encourages participants to consider how child spacing methods might help them achieve their goals for their family, and to make choices together for their families.
Social and Behavior Change Objectives
Provide accurate health information to men and women on family planning.
Redefine roles and norms around decision-making and participation.
Demonstrate equitable communication and decision-making around family planning.
Encourage couples to seek advice on family planning from health care providers.
The game is facilitated by a Boma Health Worker (BHW), or other influential community members, and includes an implementation guide, the interactive game, and a child spacing planning card.
Implementation Guide
The implementation guide is for program implementers that oversee high-level activities and help facilitate coordination of program activities with state and county level staff. This guide will walk you through what you need to know about the Breakthrough ACTION South Sudan male engagement game solution set.
Interactive Game
There are three primary types of interactive cards – Quiz cards, Life Event cards and Discussion cards. Prior to playing the game in each community, BHWs or relevant leaders will have an opportunity to exclude game cards that do not suit the community’s context. This ability to tailor the game and include only the most relevant game cards increases the scalability and adaptability of the game across various regions
Child Spacing Planning Card
The child spacing planning card is a physical reminder for couples to have child spacing conversations. It models for couples how to approach these conversations and prompts them to plan to visit the health facility together. It is handed to participants after the play the game.
The game itself is designed in a similar structure to "Together we Grow". It should to be adapted based on where you are implementing it. It is recommended that you tailor the game at the Boma level with input from community leaders. Specific guidance is included in the implementation guide.
Although this document offers initial guidance around implementation of the solution-set, note that this is an evolving document. The suggestions for implementation are based on preliminary insights that the Breakthrough ACTION team gathered. Throughout the document, we have tried to note where additional testing or work may be needed. We encourage implementers to build upon and adjust this document as needed.
