Visit the meat department and look for low cost stew beef - 1 lb (or Beyond Beef). You may find suitable meat in the discount bin. Cooking in the pot for at least an hour will soften up even the toughest cut. Start with1 lb Kidney beans.
Cube and brown the beef in a skillet with an onion, or in the pot before you start the dried beans. Throw in pot at any point, earlier is better. Include the juices to add flavor. Baby carrots, 2 cups of barley and a cubed large potato at the last hour will round out this meal and remind you of your mom’s winter stew. Goes well with Merlot and a fire in the fireplace.
