The Batang Empowered and Resilient Team (BERT) is an initiative by Save the Children Philippines aimed at promoting disaster preparedness and resilience among children. This program emerged from the Local Empowerment through Access and Participation (LEAP) project, initially launched in Northern Iloilo in 2017. It has since expanded to various regions, including Western Visayas and the province of Antique . On March 2019, Bulihan National High School was among the 20 Pilot Schools in Region 3 selected to be part of the Save the Children Philippines' School Safe from Disaster Program.
BERT trains children to become facilitators who teach their peers about risk reduction and resilience. This child-centered approach not only equips children with essential skills but also empowers them to disseminate knowledge within their schools, families, and communities. The initiative gained momentum after the impact of Typhoon Haiyan, highlighting the need for better disaster preparedness among children.
The program has shown significant success, with over 3,000 children trained as BERT facilitators across several municipalities. The trainings involve interactive and engaging methods, ensuring that children can confidently share their knowledge and skills, thereby enhancing community resilience.
