In this course, we learnt about the importance of all English-medium teachers to be good role models in spoken English. We often underestimate the power of the spoken word and how language can help students in learning as well. In Science, there are many technical terms and words that students have to remember, some of which are not as intuitive in the way it is pronounced. Thus, in this course, we were introduced to a range of resources that helped us investigate terms specific to our own disciplines and how we can break down the pronunciations to our students. We were made aware of the variety of ways of pronouncing certain words and technical terms spoken in Singapore, how to differentiate them and the historical reasons of the different pronunciations. This would help us be in a better position to help our students develop their spoken competence and encourage them to see the importance of speaking with accurate pronunciation and intonation during oral presentations or discussions. It also reminds us that a teacher's pronunciation and whether or not we elucidate these difficult pronunciations to our students may also impact our ability to deliver content effectively to the students.
