In this course, I learnt about the difference between parental involvement, parental partnership and parental engagement, with the latter being the proactive involvement of parents and what we as teacher should work towards. We examined the diversity of family structures, parenting styles and issues at home that may impact students’ attitudes and learning as well as how teachers can help facilitate and improve parental motivational belief, parental efficiacy and parental perception of the invitation for involvement (Hoover Dempsey Model). Finally, we also discussed practical strategies and taking a strength-based approach to build rapport and promote empathy between teacher, parent and child. For our group assignment, my group interviewed our classmate who had an immigrant mother, to understand the struggles and challenges to parent-teacher communication as well as how to potentially mitigate these challenges.
