The goal of our research is to combine the social sciences, humanities, and engineering to study and help improve cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in both our locality and our state at large. We do this by using SCGSSM senior research interns, working under the supervision of SCGSSM tenured faculty members, to work independently on pressing issues within the transportation sector. By conducting student-led interviews of key cadres in the transportation field, consulting printed and online sources on anthropological movement by global scholars in academia, and engaging in direct participant observation of existing infrastructure, we arrive at design and policy recommendations for our communities. We also enact some of those recommendations temporarily, with permission and assistance from local authorities and the SC Department of Transportation.
