John Collier graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture
After graduating, Mr. Collier worked at Purdue for over 30 years as a landscape architect, landscape designer, director of campus master planning, and then finally area coordination for residential life
Now, he works for the City of Lafayette, Indiana
While working at Purdue, Mr. Collier along with a handful of others oversaw the remodeling and renovation of Purdue's entire campus to make it more pedestrian and bike friendly. I asked him about how the group was organized, how much pushback they faced while working, how they overcame roadblocks in their project, and what could've been improved. His big thing was that people need to have the facilities to go outside safely and also a reason to go outside; greenspaces are key when designing a new campus.
"Follow the three E's:
Education - educate the users about how to properly interact with outside spaces.
Engineering (aka Infrastructure) - have the proper design to have a well-functioning and efficient space.
Enforcement - everyone must use the areas properly and understand the boundaries of public spaces.
Without even one of these E's, the entire design falls flat and fails."
"People are being brought from all over the US and the world (to Purdue), and so everyone has a different mindset about how bicycles should be used."
As of 2018, Ederer was a Ph.D. student from the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology studying transportation systems engineering in Atlanta.
As of 2018, serving as a research assistant in the Urban Transportation Information Lab led by Dr. Kari Watkins.
Became interested in cycling infrastructure after working at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and experiencing firsthand how horrifically poor Atlanta's biking infrastructure was.
Has won a few awards, such as the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship
Has written two research reports, which are linked here:
As of 2023, he has a Doctor of Philosophy in Transportation Systems Engineering. He then worked as a Public Health Analyst. Currently, he works as the Lieutenant at Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and an Epidemiologist for the CDC in the Physical Activity and Health Branch.
