Setting up an animal laboratory in India involves following a strict regulatory process to ensure animal welfare. The Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) governs these procedures. Here's a breakdown of the key steps:
Registration with CPCSEA:
Your establishment needs to be registered with CPCSEA. This involves submitting necessary documents and fulfilling their guidelines.
Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC):
Form an IAEC within your institution. This committee will review and approve animal research proposals based on ethical considerations.
Animal House Facility (AHF) Inspection:
Get your AHF inspected by CPCSEA to ensure it meets their guidelines for animal housing and care. These guidelines cover aspects like animal space, ventilation, temperature control, hygiene, and waste disposal.
Project Approval:
Once your AHF is approved, submit your specific animal research projects for approval. IAEC will handle approvals for small animals, while CPCSEA handles approvals for large animals.
