Caltrain is a multi-county joint operation between Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties. Operating between Gilroy, San Jose, and San Francisco, this line is arguably the busiest in the Bay Area. Caltrain owns and maintains all of its equipment at Caltrain Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility, or CEMOF , in between San Jose Diridon and the College Park station. Union Pacific owns trackage on this line between Gilroy and Santa Clara, however it is governed by Caltrain dispatchers and timetables. Between these two points, engineers and conductors must comply with Union Pacific procedures if something abnormal were to arise. All Caltrain trains operate under reporting mark JPBX (Joint Powers Board). JPBX operates a roster of F40PH-2, F40PH-2C, F40PH-2CAT, amd MP36PH-3C locomotives numbered 900 through 922 and 923 through 928. The old Electro-Motive Division F40 series diesels are being replaced by all electric Stadler KISS EMUs as part of the Caltrain Modernization project, or CalMod. Caltrain will keep their MP36PH-3Cs, reserved strictly for Baby Bullet service. Caltrain also has a fleet of Nippon-Sharyo coaches and cabcars, as well as German built Bombardier cars. JPBX operates push-pull services, utilizing cab cars on all northbound services. JPBX uses its own radio frequencies, but between Gilroy and Santa Clara, trains and engineers use the same radio frequencies as Union Pacific.
