NGC 7479, also known as the Propeller Galaxy or the Superman Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy located approximately 105 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. It has an apparent magnitude of 11.6 and an apparent size of about 4.1 by 3.1 arcminutes.
One of the most intriguing features of NGC 7479 is its spiral arms, which create the shape of a backward "S" as they rotate counter-clockwise. This unique structure has earned it the nickname "Superman Galaxy." The galaxy is classified as a Seyfert galaxy, meaning it has an active galactic nucleus with a central supermassive black hole and an accretion disc. The black hole is feeding on the surrounding gas, contributing to the galaxy's intense star formation activity.
NGC 7479 is also known for its radio jet, which bends in the opposite direction to the stars and dust in the arms of the galaxy. This unusual feature is thought to be the result of a minor merger with another galaxy1. The galaxy has experienced two recent supernovae, one in 1990 and another in 2009.
