Michigan Governor
There are many ways pro-choice supporters and organizers can fight for reproductive rights. We encourage individuals to support their local organizations, write to government representatives and vote for politicians that defend reproductive rights.
What's Happening in Michigan?
As of now, individuals seeking an abortion in Michigan must receive counseling that that is designed to encourage them from not proceeding with the abortion. This counseling must happen at least 24 hours before the procedure. Minors who are seeking an abortion must gain consent from their parents or guardians. Private insurance policies will only cover abortions in the case of life threatening problems, or if an optional rider is purchased at an additional cost. This is the same for public policies. Public funding is available for abortions in the case of rape, incest or life endangerment. The state also requires abortion clinics to unnecessary standards in regards to their facilities, equipment and staff. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, a trigger law will go into effect immediately, which will bam abortions in Michigan. You can find more information about this trigger law and the actions being taken in the courts section of this page.
In the Legislature
The Michigan legislature currently has no pending bills that would further detract from women's reproductive rights.
In the Courts
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is suing 13 prosecutors in that have abortion clinics in their jurisdiction. The lawsuit is against the 1931 Michigan Abortion law that would ban abortion even in cases of rape or incest. This is a preemptive lawsuit in an attempt to protect reproductive rights in Michigan.
