Women's March on Washington - Indiana
This organization started as a coalition of organizers helping put together the details for the march in Washington in 2017. However, they continue to advocate for reproductive rights and raise awareness about new legislation and occurrences in Indiana.
Indiana Governor
There are many ways pro-choice supporters and organizers can fight for reproductive rights. We encourage individuals to support their local organizations, write to government representatives and vote for politicians that defend reproductive rights.
What's Happening in Indiana?
As of now, Individuals must attend a state-mandated counseling session 18 hours before their procedure prior to receiving an abortion in Indiana. This counseling is designed to deter people from further seeking an abortion. Unless individuals purchase a separate rider for their plan, private and public health insurance policies will only cover abortions in cases of life threatening circumstances, rape or incest. The use of telemedicine to obtain a medicated abortion is illegal, and medicated abortions can not be administered after 10 weeks of pregnancy. Minors must have parental consent before receiving an abortion, and all patients must have an ultrasound before going through with the abortion. Abortions after 22 weeks are illegal unless the pregnancy results in seriously compromised physical health. Indiana also enforces unnecessary standards on facilities, staff and equipment. Although there are no trigger laws to immediately ban abortions in the case that Roe v. Wade is overturned by the Supreme Court, Georgia will still be subject to laws that greatly diminish an individual's right to choose. Future legislation in this state could create a complete ban on abortions.
In the Legislature
House Bill 1282: This bill repeals all statutes regulating and authorizing abortion. Asserts that life begins when the egg is fertilized by sperm.
House Bill 1217: This bill is known as the "abortion coercion bill." It states that all women seeking an abortion must be informed that abortion coercion is illegal. They also must be offered additional information about other services and offer them another exit out of the facility.
Senate Bill 0309: This bill states that the legislature will hold a special session to consider legislation regarding abortion in the event that Roe v. Wade were overturned, a relevant amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution or a decision were made by the Supreme Court in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
Senate Bill 0399: This bill establishes a form that must be signed by the guardians or minors seeking an abortion. Health care providers cannot carry through with the abortion prior to receiving the signed form.
In the Courts
In 2021, the Indiana courts ruled that laws regarding how abortion-inducing drugs could be dispensed, counseling, second-trimester hospitalization and a ban on telemedicine use for medicated abortions could go into effect. Read more about these cases HERE.
