Kate Montefiore started her artistic career as a student at St Martin’s School of Art in London, and has a degree in theatre and costume design. She also makes and teaches jewellery design and making. Most of her working life has been in arts management behind the scenes working to enable the work reach a wider audience. More recently she has been going back to a more creative side, has stopped doing grant applications and business plans and has started getting inks and paints all over her clothes just like she did at art school. She joined Cardiff Print Workshop after being totally inspired by Bill Chamber’s ‘Introduction to printmaking’ course and now she is hooked.
Each piece she creates is a one-off. Her monotype prints are always experimental and try to capture the strength of the natural world.
The piece titled TYPICAL is a simple look at natural grasses against a dark background and depicts a view of the world that is relatively unquestioning and conventional.
The other piece exhibited is called DIVERSE and is much more tentative in the first place, but still strong and echos thinking ‘outside of the box’. It shows the need for exploration and the breaking down of barriers and champions the way neurodiverse people see the world.
TYPICAL is a print that has been through the press once.
DIVERSE has been through the press three times, adding layers of detail and breaking through the edges.
Kate enjoys walking her dog, especially in the Nature Reserve at Lavernock, where the biodiversity of plants is endlessly inspiring. Kate is interested in the strength of nature to override our impact on the world. Is it really necessary for us all to see things within boundaries set by education systems and bureaucratic criteria when, just a step away is a world of possibilities and desires?
