Paper Folding Relief Sculpture

I created this lesson for students at Brambleton Middle School. The original plan was shared with me by Lucy Solazzo when we worked together at Rosa Lee Carter, using the terms relief sculpture and radial symmetry. I modified the information and used different folds to challenge the middle school students. On the first day, we discussed and sketched examples of radial symmetry, then planned our designs. I showed the class a video to demonstrate each of the folds. I also provided an example and reviewed their objectives. On the second day, they started folding the pieces and attaching them to their base. On the third day, we finished our projects and completed an exit slip. I displayed their finished work which brightened the halls of Brambleton Middle School over the holiday break.
