I created this 2nd Grade Lesson to teach students at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary the techniques of creating a composition with collaged materials to communicate a personal memory. We discussed some favorite people, pets and places that students had loved. I demonstrated how to sketch a portrait from a photograph and asked the class to bring in a picture or postcard for this project. We looked at works of collage art and discussed how some artists arrange words, symbols, and other decorative features to draw focus and express feelings. I provided many collage supplies including background papers, magazines, pens, stencils, patterned scissors, ribbon, buttons, stamps, glue, sequin, found objects, etc. Students felt a very strong connection to this lesson because they were allowed to choose very personal subject matter for the act of preserving a memory.
