Starry Night Lesson Plan

We started the lesson by learning about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and watching an animation of his painting, Starry Night. I demonstrated how the students could draw colorful swirly lines on deep blue paper with opaque paint sticks and oil pastels. I provided all of the supplies and instructed the class to start out writing their names and class code on the back. They worked happily for several minutes.

I gained their attention to demonstrate how to cut out the silhouette of a village from black paper, then had them do the same. They glued the buildings onto the bottom of their starry night skies, then used the oil pastels to draw lit windows. The students were fully engaged with the project and the final results were beautiful. At the end of this one-day lesson, we reviewed how we can create movement with lines.
