Indian Elephants
I modified this 2nd Grade Lesson (provided by Lucy Solazzo) to teach students at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary the history and techniques of creating an intricate pattern on the elephant shape. We discussed the diverse crafts of India which are rich in cultural history, influenced by the different empires. Throughout centuries, crafts such as decorative painting, printmaking and fabric embellishment have embedded respect in Indian tradition. Students sketched front and side views of elephants which I demonstrated for them using contour lines. I ended the first class with a video of Suda, the painting elephant.
On the second day of this lesson, I shared various copies of patterns which students used to create their designs. They drew their large elephant outlines and contour lines, then filled the spaces between the lines with patterns. I finished the lesson on the third day by asking students to carefully color their patterns with fine marker. A high percentage of the student population at this school is of Indian background, so many students felt a close connection to this lesson and enjoyed sharing their heritage with their classmates.
