I’m Lydia Lehman, a second year Master’s student at Texas State University studying Primatology under Dr. Jill Pruetz. The majority of my art is done digitally by hand on an iPad, but I also have a passion for turning this art into physical posters and/or stickers. I found inspiration in primate art because prior to studying biological anthropology, I had been entirely unaware of the vast range that primate morphology can span both in function and visually. I felt that introducing others to these lesser known genera was something that I was capable of, so I began to post my artwork online and have found a wonderful community of artistically interesting primatologists (and casual primate enjoyers).
Similarly to my desire to acquaint people to lesser known primates for my own fun, I believe that there is great merit to making the general public aware of species that don’t get as much attention. Unfortunately, less attention tends to mean fewer donations, as donators (understandably) enjoy giving to organizations that involve their favorite animal. My thought process is that, perhaps, giving these donators access to forming emotional bonds with new critters via exposure to their existence will lead to a greater flow of donations toward them.
